It’s calm at the eye of a typhoon yet there is a powerful force swirling around of wind and rain stirred up by nature. I can’t begin to count how many storms life has sent in my direction whether they were provided by mother nature or by people and events or just plain bad timing; wrong place, wrong time. The momentum of such times would throw me off balance more times than not so that any move I made next would just add to that momentum and the result would be more of the same headed my way. I learned quickly to duck and run but when I wasn’t focused the result was instead of, duck and run it was, trip and fall. The most difficult part of going through one of life’s stormy events is keeping calm. Even before I decided what my next move would be I knew the starting point of my process would be optimal if I could just relax and get a sense of the bigger picture.
I like the metaphor of being in the eye of the storm but the reality of it is even better. It provides an excellent opportunity to be present in the moment and practice awareness. I liken it to being inside a diamond looking out at the world held in rainbows of refracted light and I am filled with a sense of awe. I am hyper aware of every sound, every movement, every breath I take in. I can be certain that more is coming, more wind rain and turbulence but in that place I am safe.
I found other ways to create this feeling of safety on my own and most importantly this sense of awareness without waiting for a typhoon to pass over my head. The first is meditation. With practice, just 15 or 20 minutes of getting comfortable and focusing on my breath I can rendezvouz with the vibration of nature and feel my part in it. Not separated from it, part of the flow. Call it acceptance or call it surrender, meditation has taught me to appreciate times of ease and gives me the best starting point imaginable for my next move when things get stormy and believe me it's not usually duck and run or trip and fall. It is a dance with right now and whatever comes next. Whether your life is one of ease and comfort or regularly tossed and turbulent you have a choice to pick your point of perception. And practicing meditation opens the door to a sense of peace and focus, a diamond like point of perception giving me an awareness of the source energy that is me, that is you, that is all of us.
